An individual’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity does not define them entirely, nor does it mean they have inherent mental health concerns. What we do know however, is that this part of our story and identity does mean we often face a disproportionate amount of prejudice and discrimination within our family of origin and the systems in Canada (education, healthcare, etc.).
2SLGBTQ+ people and communities are some of the most marginalized in Canada. 1 in 3 individuals have experienced verbal threats and bullying and 1 in 5 have experienced a traumatic sexual or physical assault based on their identity. Levels of homophobia and transphobia experienced by an individual directly correlate to prevalence of mental health concerns including but not limited to depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, homelessness, symptoms of trauma, and suicide.
Whether you are looking for support for your own mental health concerns, 2SLGBTQ+ related issues, relationship challenges or you are a parent/family member/partner of someone who identifies as 2SLGBTQ+, we are here to listen and provide a safe and non-judgmental space to support you.
