Those who identify as men can experience the same challenges with their thoughts, feelings, behaviour, and relationships as women however, it’s often their sense of self as a man in our society that creates barriers to getting the support they need to be healthy and to live their best life.
Data shows us that women in Canada are much more likely to engage in counselling and psychotherapy than men. Men often suffer in silence with anxious thoughts and feelings of depression, or they stop themselves from expressing emotions around grief and trauma, resorting to unhealthy coping strategies to numb the pain. Men can benefit from having a safe and private space to explore any issues that might be coming up for them.
Clearly and definitively, no. We work with all those who are seeking support for their mental health as long as both client and therapist feel it is a good fit and we have the expertise and skills to support them. A focus on ‘men’s issues’ is not to exclude those who do not identify as men but to provide informed counselling to men facing mental health concerns. Specialized service with insight into the the impact of masculine gender norms on their mental health and stigma around men seeking support through therapy allow them to achieve their preferred goals in counselling.
3 out of 4 suicides in Canada are men who likely, at some point in their lives, were told to “man-up” insinuating they needed to show less emotion, be ‘stronger’ or ignore their own health concerns. Our goal is to provide much needed and accessible support to men to address their concerns with depression, anxiety, work stress, relationships and/or general well-being and self-improvement.
